The Bathroom a Sanctuary of Peace and Relaxation

Most people didn't have a bath in their house a century ago. Even during the 50's most people didn't have a bathroom. As for today, in most of the houses there's a bathroom to be found. There are some exceptions of course. In some cultures it is common to have a public bathing place. Think in example about the Turkish bathhouses also known as Hammam's where people can shower, bathe, take a steam bath and in some cases get a massage etc. Today the day, it is possible to get most of this luxury in your own bathroom! Whether it's a steam bath, massage douche, sauna or bubble bath, today's bathrooms are a place where many people retreat to relax a bit in many ways.

Where people used to take a shower or bath once a week, these days many people spend about 30 minutes per day in their bathroom. One of the reasons is the growth of the offer of luxurious bathroom fixtures. Other reasons are that it became known that it is good for a person's physical state to cleanse their body more often and also the people tend to spend a lot of time in their bathroom after they have been attending to some sport. Since most bathrooms are home to toilets, more time is spent in the bathroom as well.

Many people tend to retreat to the bathroom for the peace and quiet it brings. It may be a little bit sad but half of the people associate the bathroom with being the only place where they can spend some time to themselves. There is a good amount of people that tend to retreat to the bathroom to think as well.

According to a spokesperson from a team that did research to the time people spend in their bathroom, people spend between 6 and 8 months of their life in their bathroom. In households where a couple lives there's sometimes a fuss about who spends more time in the bathroom, men or woman. According to the same group of researchers it is true that woman do spend more time in the bathroom, about 1 month more in a lifetime. Men spend more time on the toilet in general.

The development of bathrooms through the 20th and 21st century and the changed way of living by people has made the bathroom a sanctuary of peace and relaxation.
