Doing the Dirty Work: Tips to Cleaning the Bathroom
Nobody likes to clean the bathroom. But, no doubt about it, everyone likes the bathroom to be clean. Here is your guide to cleaning the bathroom so you don't have to put it off any longer.
Cleaning products
Before setting out to clean the bathroom, make sure you have the proper cleaning supplies. Common household products that can be used for cleaning include vinegar, bleach, and lemon juice. You can also choose to use products made for bathroom cleaning such as Tilex or Soft Scrub.
You're going to want to have something to wipe the surfaces with such as paper towels, or a cloth rag and some newspaper, and a rough sponge for hard to clean surfaces. Also, for surfaces like the mirror and toilet, have a spray bottle. For cleaning the toilet, have a toilet brush handy, and some disinfectant. You'll need a broom, mop and bucket for the bathroom floor as well. Lastly, be sure to wear rubber gloves to protect your skin from the chemicals and the bacteria.
Bathtub
Let's start off with the bathtub. The first thing you want to do is remove everything from inside and on the ledges of the bathtub, such as shower mats, shampoo bottles, or bath toys. It's a good idea to wash these items with soap and water before placing back into the clean tub. As for the tub, you can use vinegar, or a quarter cup of bleach mixed with a gallon of water to get it clean. To scrub the surface of the tub, use a rough sponge to get out any mildew buildup. Make sure you get the corner of the wall and in between any tiles on the wall, so you can get out the mildew and soap scum. After the bathtub is cleaned to your satisfaction, run the water in the bathtub to rinse out the chemicals.
Toilet
Now let's move onto the toilet, the most dreaded task of cleaning the bathroom. First thing you want to do is remove everything from on the toilet such as a toilet seat cover and anything that might be on the tank. Put your disinfectant in a spray bottle and thoroughly spray inside the toilet bowl, and then scrub every inch with the toilet brush. Once you've removed all stains, flush the toilet. Then, with your disinfectant and paper towels or a rag, clean the exterior of the toilet: the outside of the bowl, the lid, the base, the tank and the toilet seat. Now, the worst part of cleaning the bathroom is over. If you use a cloth rag, be sure to throw it away or wash in a washing machine before using it. Do not use it on any other surfaces unless it has been cleaned.
Bathroom Mirror
With the toilet out of the way, let's clean the bathroom mirror. The bathroom mirror is easily dirtied with things like toothpaste residue and hairspray, and nobody likes looking into spotted mirror. A great cleaning solution for the bathroom mirror is vinegar in a spray bottle. This will clean the surface and kill any lingering bacteria. Spray the vinegar on the mirror and wipe off the residue on the bathroom mirror with a paper towel or a cloth rag..
Then, spray the mirror again and take crumpled up newspaper and wipe off the mirror in circular motions. The newspaper cleans the surface without leaving any smears once it dries.
Bathroom Sink
Let's move onto the bathroom sink. The first thing you should do is take a wet paper towel and remove any toothpaste or hair in the sink, or use a rough sponge if the sink is particularly messy. Then, thoroughly spray the inside of the sink, faucet and handles with vinegar or desired cleaning solution. Use paper towels or a cloth rag to wash the surface clean, and then run the faucet water to rinse the cleaning solution down the drain.
Floor
Finally, the last task is cleaning the bathroom floor. The first thing you want to do is move any mats or movable objects from the floor and sweep the area. Then, fill the mop bucket with vinegar and water, or any other desired cleaning solution such as diluted bleach. Mop the floor, and let it try before replacing any mats or objects you moved out of the way.
Keep it clean
Keeping your bathroom clean is extremely important for both health and aesthetic reasons. If you clean your bathroom once a week, then the upkeep is easy. By not letting the residue, dirt and mildew build up, you should be able to breeze right through cleaning your bathroom.
